Phoenix, Arizona is located just at the edge of the dry salt river. It springs into the sky out of the plains, its skyline filled with offices and high-rises, a sharp contrast with the desert wilderness in view behind it. It is the largest state capitol in the United States, and it has quite the population.
Arcadia, a neighborhood in Phoenix, bounded roughly by 44th Street to 68th Street and from Camelback Road to the Arizona Crosscut Canal. As the former site of citrus groves, the large lots are well-landscaped, and the houses are well-kept. It is the ideal place to live, a blend of city and suburban life. Except for a few small details.
Like the fact that the district’s high school was burnt to the ground only a year earlier. Arson, the fire marshal told the news crews after they searched the abandoned skeleton of a building for clues. They never caught the perpetrator, though everyone had their suspects – those they hated, those they wanted to see out. Everyone has enemies in this perfect little community.
The students were split up across the city for the remainder of the year, sent in groups to various other schools. In the mean time, the high school was rebuilt, with a new state-of-the-art design. This September, the students will return to classes, to gossip, with a new way of looking at all those who they used to trust. Who is guilty, and who is innocent?
